Computing - KS3
The Key Stage 3 programme for Computing adheres to the English National Curriculum programme of study, and builds on the foundations set in the Primary school.
The course in all three years equips our students to use computational thinking and creativity to be able to solve real-world problems. The core of computing is Computer Science, in which our students are taught the principles of computation, decomposition and pattern recognition, how digital systems work, and how to program a computer in a variety of different environments. We also ensure that our students are digitally literate - so that they can express themselves through information and communication technology, and that they have a very good understanding of safe and responsible use of technology.
- Exploration of e-safety concepts - safe and responsible use of the internet, and an exploration of cyber-bullying
- Spreadsheets - creating and manipulating data via spreadsheets, and presenting the data in different formats
- Computer programming - using the Visual Coding environment Scratch.
- Networking and internet fundamentals - learning about the hardware and software that powers Local Area and Wide Area networks
- Binary/denary conversion - learning about the fundamental flow of 1s and 0s that underpin all computational data
- Interactive presentation - using advanced multimedia techniques in order to create an electronic storybook
- Exploration of e-safety concepts - safe and responsible use of the internet, the concepts of cyber-bullying and examining social networking
- Technology fundamentals - examining the hardware and software that underpins modern computing devices
- Cloud computing - exploring the concepts of cloud storage and comparing with more traditional off-line methods
- Image manipulation - using industry-standard software to create, manipulate and present images in a variety of multimedia formats
- Website design - creating web pages in HTML format, incorporating CSS scripting and dovetailing with the images created in the previous unit
- Sound manipulation - using Audacity to create and edit audio data
- Multimedia project - combining the above tools to create an e-portfolio of work
- Networking, topologies and IP address - examining networking concepts in detail, including packets, IP addresses and potential network threats such as malware or firewall intrusions
- Exploration of e-safety concepts - safe and responsible use of the internet, the concepts of cyber-bullying, social networking and geo-locating apps
- Spreadsheets- building on the Year 7 unit, to include more advanced concepts such as IF statements and VLookup functions.
- Text-based computer programming - using the Python environment in order to explore a variety of concepts, including variables, lists, loops, iteration and decisions. This lays the groundwork for utilising Python at a more advanced level in GCSE Computing when the students take the course in Year 10.
- Database concepts - creating and editing a variety of databases, including the principles of validation and verification.
- Binary, denary, hexadecimal and ASCII encoding - again building on the concepts first encountered in Year 7. This includes extending the learning of the students to consider hexadecimal codes in colour palettes in websites, and the composition of MAC addresses.
